Why are there so many black football players and so few black coaches an cheerleaders.?
And why is the head of the league a white dude. Don’t you think a black man would be better at running NFL. Most the players are black, how can they relat to an old white man.
I really can’t answer your last comment, because to me-I am a mixed race individual which includes African-American, by the way-I want someone running an organization because they are capable of it. Roger Goodell has worked in the NFL offices and I believe he is a very capable commissioner. Do I think a black man would be better at running the NFL? That depends a lot on which side of the fence you address the question from. It is also my opinion that it really doesn’t matter who the commissioner is. The players spend more time with their coaches and teammates in their individual organizations for that to matter.
As far as the question of why so few black cheerleaders, those decisions are made by the respective organizations. I cannot answer that. In regards to so few black coaches, football-like every other part of society-has certain ingrained views on people. One of those long held views was that blacks couldn’t be put in “thinking” positions like quarterback or Head Coach. Things are turning slowly, as people such as Tony Dungy of the Indianapolis Colts and Lovie Smith of the Chicago Bears are proving that they are excellent head coaches. Since I believe 2001, the NFL has had the “Rooney Rule” named after Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney which requires all teams hiring a head coach to interview a minority candidate for all head coaching openings. This does not guarantee hiring, but it puts more people into the pipeline. There will always be people who will only hire certain people based on race, age, national, etc, but the NFL is trying, albeit slowly and many years after it probably should have, to address the matter.
One side note. I get the feeling that this letter pertains less to NFL head coaches and cheerleaders and more to MIchael Vick. I believe that he should get the chair for what he did. I will never watch another game he plays in.
