depends, if you have a 5 pocket girdle you put the hip, tail and thigh pads in the girdle and the knee pads in the pants. But if you still use the older style the hip and tail pads go in the girdle and the thigh and knee in the pants. The purpose of a belt is the same as any belt keep your pants up due to the weight the pads add.
