Does anyone remember when people operated the elevators?
I remember the phrase, “Third Floor, Myrtle’s Girdles. Does your bosom need a boost?”
I remember navy blue suits with a carnation or a white lace-trimmed handkerchiefs in their chest pocket. Talk about old memories.
Oh yes, I was an elevator driver. I was paid $1 an hour. It helped me work my way through school. That was 1955-56. I loved driving that elevator. I sure had fun with the young female passengers who boarded my elevator on the 4th floor when beauty school was out.
I would turn the lights out. When the door closed it was pitch black in there. The girls would start quizzing me about it and I would just say “sorry I can’t help it, they just burned out.” Then I would stop between floors and say the elevator was broken. Hell those were fun times.
Another prank was to stop the elevator about 2 feet below the floor and tell the girls that was the best I could do. They would have to climb down into my elevator. One time the 4th floor light came one, I thought some girls were there so I stopped two feet below the floor. When I opened the doors I saw the building owner standing there. He said: “What the hell are you doing clear down there, can’t you run this thing yet?”
