Inviting Children Dilemma?
I will be inviting my brother’s children to my wedding: 2 teens and a 7 year-old. I also want to invite my fiance’s siblings kid(s) but their situations are a bit unusual:
1. Fi’s sister: Has a daughter age 10, who I would invite. However, my Fi’s sister has a developmentally disabled stepdaughter, age 23 who has a mental age of about 10. My Fi’s sister has custody of the girl 50% of the time, and the rest of the time she’s with her bio-mom. They live far away in Alaska. Should I invite the step-daughter too?
2. My Fi’s brother has no bio-children of his own, but his grandchildren ages 12 and 15 live with him b/c their mom (his stepdaughter) is a drug addict. Do I invite the grandchildren? They all live 3,000 miles away.
3. My SIL’s sister is a close family member and single mom w/an infant who will be a year-old at the time of the wedding. I really would rather not have a child so young at the wedding, but I’m inviting these other kids. What do you think?
If you are that close with these family members, or you fiance is, talk individually about your dilemma. It’s possible that some of these people won’t be able to travel that far anyway, or would only send as few people as possible. As for the one year old, you’re right, it would be awkward. My nephew was 3 at my wedding and was still all over the place and not entirely well-behaved. It’s appropriate to ask her to get a babysitter, perhaps you can even offer to pay for it.
I would invite the grandchildren. They are old enough to take care of themselves.
