If you’re asking about NCAA rules….
yes.
A player has 5 calendar years to complete 4 years of “playing eligibility”.
Schools / players can petition for exceptions based upon injury status.
There are no exceptions allowed for academic ineligibility.
Those rules are rather primary to scholarship status;
if a college recruits a player with promise of “full scholarship”,
a red-shirt year does NOT void the scholarship.
