How to keep a winning youth sports team motivated?
At 7-0 they are now slacking off and doing just enough to win. I talk to them about it every practice and every game but they just don’t have the hustle, motivation, or attention to detail they had at the beginning of the season. Nothing I say or do seems to change this slow slide we are on.
Show them what can happen i they continue slacking off. Push them harder and use running as a punishment. They may hate you but it would be for a greater good. Try getting a practice session with a team clearly better than them and show them the differences. Tell them that just because they’ve won for so long is because of luck plus a little bit of skill and there are teams out there better than them. Sometimes, a loss can be good for it will give them a goal to aim for together. Make them realize that you are only trying to make them understand that they can do better. Explain to them that if they lose even one game it could mean great consequences and sometimes it takes a bit of losing to make them realize this. If you are really desperate, when you play a bad team make horrible plays so they loose on purpose for the first half and motivate them to come back for the second. Be careful to make the score difference large enough to scare them a bit but small enough to catch up to. It risky, but it will definateley work.
